Getting Your Texas Real Estate License
Step 1: Classes
The Texas Real Estate Commission requires all new agents to complete certain courses before they can apply for a license. These classes cover basic and advanced topics in real estate and can be taken either online or in a classroom setting from an approved education provider.
Course requirements:
- Principles of Real Estate (60 Classroom Hours)
- Law of Agency (30 classroom hours)
- Law of Contracts (30 classroom hours)
- Promulgated Contracts Forms (30 classroom hours)
- Real Estate Finance (30 classroom hours)
Step 2: The Application
Once you have completed all of your classes, you may then apply for your license. At this point you will have to submit to a background check as well as fingerprinting for security reasons.
Step 3: Testing
After your application is received and approved, you will then need to take the license exam. The test consists of 110 questions and is limited to 150 minutes.
But don’t worry there are plenty of ways to prepare.
Step 4: Sponsorship
Texas law requires all new salespeople to have sponsoring broker. The broker must be an active licensed broker in the State of Texas.
Step 5: Becoming a Realtor
Joining the local, state, and national board of Realtors will give you access to the MLS (Multiple Listing Service), special programs and discounts, as well as training and support at the local and national level.
At this point, you can now go out and start practicing real estate and growing your business.

Choosing a Broker
"As a real estate agent, your choice of companies is the most important career choice you will ever make. That company must provide goals, embrace change, set standards, give training, products and support. Most of all, that company must treat you with honesty and respect. I can say there is only one choice for me and that is ERA Newlin & Company. Mike and Sandy Newlin give freely to make sure all their agents are treated fairly and, most of all, have all the support one could ever wish to have."
